SUMMARY
Beginning with the revolution in Tunisia in 2010, the Arab world has witnessed protest movements often referred to as the Arab spring. In addition to protesting against state corruption, dictatorship and poor human rights records, the protest movements were also triggered by weak socio economic conditions. It is important to note that countries of the Arab world has historically suffered from rising inequalities, high unemployment rates and widespread poverty. Today and despite the optimism and hope for more liberal societies, promises have not been realized. Large insecurity and poor economic conditions are still realities in some countries of the region.
The spirit of this conference is very much rooted in this local and regional context. Our contention point is that encouraging private initiatives and entrepreneurship can help in addressing a number of social and societal problems faced by countries in the region in much more efficient way than government interventionism. Thanks to their innovative spirit and their capacity to tackle local issues in much more efficient way than centralized governments, entrepreneurs have indeed an important role to play in the post Arab spring era largely characterized by economic instability and large insecurity.
This conference will be an excellent occasion for different stakeholders including real entrepreneurs, government’s representatives, academics and people from the finance sector to meet and engage in open debates and discussions. Via presentations, conferences and panel discussions, this event will highlight the importance of building entrepreneurial spirit, advancing business friendly reforms and establishing a culture of multiple stakeholder dialogues in countries of the Arab world.
